The Calgary Flames announced a bit of news on Friday morning, in advance of their Black Friday game with the Florida Panthers. The club announced two year extensions for general manager Craig Conroy, president of hockey operations Don Maloney, senior vice-president/assistant GM Dave Nonis and vice-president/assistant GM Brad Pascall, with the quartet now under contract through the 2027-28 season.
Per the media release from the club: “Each of the two-year extensions were signed prior to the start of the 2025-26 season.” That’s more or less in line with what we’ve heard from the likes of Sportsnet’s Pat Steinberg and Eric Francis. Steinberg’s been discussing Conroy’s future on Flames Talk for weeks, frequently noting his confidence that Conroy would be around for awhile. In the absence of an official announcement, Francis had mentioned recently he was under the impression that it was already a done deal.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman mentioned on Wednesday – ironically, during a 5-1 Flames loss in Tampa Bay – that Conroy and the Flames were close on a deal.
Conroy, 54, is in his third season as Flames general manager after serving four seasons as a special assistant to the GM and then nine seasons as assistant GM. Prior to serving in hockey operations, Conroy played 16 seasons in the NHL, including a stint as Flames captain and a trip to the 2006 Olympics with the United States.
Maloney, 67, is in his third season as president of hockey operations and 10th season overall with the Flames. He’s been in hockey roles with various clubs dating back to 1991-92, and he’s worked with the NY Islanders, NY Rangers and Arizona – including GM stints with the Islanders and Coyotes. He played 13 seasons in the NHL. His main role is as an advisor to Conroy and a conduit between management and ownership.
Nonis, 59, is in his third season as senior VP/assistant GM with the Flames. He’s been in hockey roles with various clubs dating back to 1998-99. He’s worked with Vancouver, Anaheim and Toronto, including stints as GM with Vancouver and Toronto. He played college hockey but never made it to the NHL. His main role is working on contract negotiations with players.
Pascall, 55, is in his 12th season as assistant GM with the Flames (and third season with the VP title). He joined the Flames after a decorated run in various roles with Hockey Canada, ultimately ending up as the person overseeing their Program of Excellence. He played college hockey but never made it to the NHL. His main role is overseeing the club’s development apparatus, particularly the Calgary Wranglers.
The Flames face the Florida Panthers on Friday in the third game of their five game road trip.
