One of the Calgary Flames’ most promising young forwards will be getting his first opportunity to show his quality at the National Hockey League level. On Monday morning, in advance of their game against the Seattle Kraken, the Flames announced that they’ve recalled forward William Stromgren from the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers.

This is Stromgren’s first NHL call-up.

Stromgren is a 22-year-old left shot winger from Ornskoldsvik, Sweden. He was a second round selection by the Flames, 45th overall, in the 2021 NHL Draft. He’s currently in the third season of his entry-level deal, and he’s really impressed of late on the Wranglers’ first line alongside Dryden Hunt and Rory Kerins. Through 33 games this season, Stromgren has six goals and 29 points. As of Monday morning, that’s good enough to tie for 18th on the AHL’s points leaderboard.

Stromgren’s call-up is the product of a lot of hard work by the forward. He came up through the MODO Hockey junior system but got limited pro opportunities, ending up getting loaned to his hometown team in the second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan in 2020-21. He moved onto Rogle BK in 2021-22 and again didn’t get much SHL time, so he moved (again) to Brynas IF in 2022-23 and carved out a niche for himself as a bottom-six checking winger and penalty-killer. He also represented Sweden at the 2023 World Juniors.

Stromgren signed his entry-level deal with the Flames at the end of 2022-23 and has shown a lot of progression with the Wranglers, but he’s also had some challenges with consistency. Up until this season, he’s been a pretty streaky scorer, capable of really strong runs of play but also prone to fading into the background at times. From our vantage point, 2025-26 has represented the best sustained run of play of his professional career and his call-up is really well-deserved.

With Stromgren called up, the Flames’ active roster sits at 23 players: two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 14 forwards – and this includes the suspended John Beecher, who may also be injured. We’ll see if Stromgren ends up getting into his first NHL game on this call-up.
