On Wednesday, the Calgary Flames lost forward Walker Duehr on the waiver wire when the San Jose Sharks claimed him. On Thursday, the Flames opted to replace Duehr on their roster with Calgary Wranglers captain Clark Bishop, who they called up from the American Hockey League club.
A product of scenic St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, the 28-year-old Bishop is a left shot forward that can play center or the wing. He was originally a fifth-round draft choice by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2014, and he’s currently in his ninth year pro.
He’s spent time under contract with Carolina, Ottawa and the Flames during his pro career, but he’s primarily been a minor-leaguer: he’s spent 47 games in the NHL, split between the Hurricanes and Senators, but he recently played in his 400th game in the AHL.
Bishop joined the Flames organization as a free agent in the 2022 off-season, and while he’s spent all his time with the Wranglers, he’s been a really valuable player for that club. He’s been one of their tough-minutes forwards over the past few years, being relied upon for penalty-killing, the power play and shutting down the other team’s top players.
After posting fairly modest offensive totals over the past couple seasons – 23 points in 2022-23 and 22 points in 2023-24 – Bishop was named captain this season and coupled that with a really nice offensive uptick. Through 39 games this season, Bishop has 16 goals and 17 assists for 33 points – good for third on the Wranglers and 15th in the AHL. He currently leads the AHL outright in game-winning goals with six.
In a corresponding move, the Wranglers have recalled forward Connor Mylymok from the ECHL’s Rapid City Rush.
The Flames are back in action on Thursday night when they host the Buffalo Sabres. The Wranglers are back on Saturday when they host the San Diego Gulls.
