On Tuesday night, the Calgary Flames played the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. In a pretty competitive game, the Flames and Stars went to overtime. In that overtime period, Flames forward Ryan Strome was called for high-sticking for a hit where his stick caught Stars forward Jason Robertson high enough, and with enough force, to draw blood.
Due to the drawing of blood, the officials levied a double minor penalty to Strome. On the resulting power play, the Stars put nine shots on the Flames net. Eight of them were stopped by Flames netminder Devin Cooley.
The eighth shot beat Cooley, giving Dallas a 4-3 victory.
On Wednesday afternoon, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety concluded their review of the incident and announced that Strome has been fined $5,000 – the maximum permitted under the collective bargaining agreement – for the incident, which the league termed “cross-checking.” It’s the third time in Strome’s 913 game NHL career that he’s faced any supplemental discipline, following a fine in April 2023 for unsportsmanlike conduct and a fine in March 2024 for cross-checking.
Strome’s hit came slightly after he was crushed into the boards from behind by Stars defender Tyler Myers on a play that was initially called a major penalty for boarding, then had the penalty rescinded entirely after video review.
It’s the first fine for any Flames player in 2025-26 and the second time they’ve been levied any supplemental discipline, following John Beecher’s one game timeout for punching Nashville’s Michael McCarron in the face back in January. Consequently, the Flames have been involved in a pair of incidents that resulted in supplemental discipline towards the other team: Dallas’ Mikko Rantanen getting an automatic one game suspension after receiving a game misconduct for boarding Matt Coronato in November, and A.J. Greer’s three game suspension for boarding Connor Zary in March.
The Flames continue their road trip on Thursday night against the Colorado Avalanche.
