On Tuesday night at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, the Calgary Flames (21-15-7, 49 points) and St. Louis Blues (21-20-4, 46 points) played a tight-checking hockey game where three goals were scored and the Blues came out on top. On Thursday, the Flames will aim to get a measure of revenge when these two teams rematch… also at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis.
Tonight’s broadcast begins at 6 p.m. MT on Sportsnet West and Sportsnet 960 The Fan.

The Flames

Projected lines via Daily Faceoff:
Jonathan Huberdeau – Nazem Kadri – Martin Pospisil
Rory Kerins – Yegor Sharangovich – Jakob Pelletier
Blake Coleman – Mikael Backlund – Matt Coronato
Ryan Lomberg – Kevin Rooney – Walker Duehr
Kevin Bahl – Rasmus Andersson
Joel Hanley – MacKenzie Weegar
Jake Bean – Brayden Pachal
We’re projecting Dustin Wolf to start in net, backed up by Dan Vladar. The projected extras are Daniil Miromanov, Tyson Barrie and Andrei Kuzmenko. Aside from the goalie swap, we’re not expecting any changes from Tuesday’s lineup.
The Flames begin Thursday’s action one point ahead of Vancouver for the final Western Conference wild-card playoff spot with games-played even. They’re three points up on the Blues and have two games-in-hand. They’re six points up on Utah with games-played even. The Flames are looking up at Colorado and while they have two games-in-hand on the Avalanche, they’re six points behind them. But with the Canucks reeling, rattling off a few wins would do a lot to help strengthen the Flames’ playoff hopes and dreams.
The Flames have 23 players on their active roster. Of those, seven were born in 1999 or later, and those players – Brayden Pachal, Kevin Bahl, Martin Pospisil, Jakob Pelletier, Dustin Wolf, Rory Kerins and Matt Coronato – (along with the injured Connor Zary) have been key parts of the team’s success this season. Heck, you could argue that the growth of these youngsters is why we’re even thinking about the possibility of the team qualifying for the Stanley Cup playoffs. If one or two of these players can have a strong evening against the Blues, there’s a decent chance they could pick up the win.

The Blues

Projected lines via Daily Faceoff:
Jake Neighbours – Robert Thomas – Pavel Buchnevich
Dylan Holloway – Brayden Schenn – Jordan Kyrou
Nathan Walker – Oskar Sundqvist – Zack Bolduc
Alexey Toropchenko – Radek Faksa – Mathieu Joseph
Cam Fowler – Colton Parayko
Philip Broberg – Justin Faulk
Ryan Suter – Tyler Tucker
We’re projecting Joel Hofer to start in net, backed up by Jordan Binnington – based on reports from the rink from The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford. The projected extras looked to be Alexandre Texier, Brandon Saad and Scott Perunovich. Jake Neighbours is reportedly questionable for tonight, and it sounds like if he can’t go then Saad would play, but otherwise Saad would be scratched.
The Blues treated Tuesday like a playoff game, and they were playing against a team that was playing their third game in four nights with travel. They got a timely early goal and they played smart defence the rest of the way. But it’s not unreasonable to expect a more energetic Flames group on Thursday, so expect a game that’s a bit more up-tempo and physical than Tuesday’s.
We’re fascinated to see what kind of adjustments the Blues make in their second game against the Flames.
