It’s Hockey Day in Canada, pals! As part of the annual festivities, we have an all-Canadian match-up featuring the Calgary Flames (21-16-7, 49 points) and the Winnipeg Jets (31-12-3, 65 points). It’s the finale of a four game Central Division road trip for the Flames and they’ll be hoping to bounce back after two consecutive losses in St. Louis.
Tonight’s broadcast begins at 5 p.m. MT on Sportsnet West and City TV and Sportsnet 960 The Fan. (The other Sportsnet channels and CBC will be showing Montreal/Toronto.)

The Flames

Projected lines via Daily Faceoff:
Jonathan Huberdeau – Nazem Kadri – Martin Pospisil
Rory Kerins – Yegor Sharangovich – Andrei Kuzmenko
Blake Coleman – Mikael Backlund – Matt Coronato
Ryan Lomberg – Kevin Rooney – Jakob Pelletier
Kevin Bahl – Rasmus Andersson
MacKenzie Weegar – Daniil Miromanov
Jake Bean – Brayden Pachal
Dustin Wolf is expected to start, backed up by Dan Vladar. Slotted into the lineup are Daniil Miromanov and Andrei Kuzmenko, bumping Walker Duehr and Joel Hanley. Tyson Barrie is the other extra.
It’s the 300th NHL game for Ryan Lomberg and the 500th NHL game for Rasmus Andersson!
The Flames scored five goals in Chicago. That’s good! They scored two goals, combined, in two games in St. Louis. That’s bad! But it’s also fairly representative of the Flames’ season. They play a tight-checking style and don’t have the ability to out-score their mistakes. So they have to be on their game early and pick their spots offensively.
Calgary’s penalty kill is rough. They need to be better. And more importantly, they need to avoid penalties against the strong Jets power play group.

The Jets

Projected lines via Daily Faceoff:
Kyle Connor – Mark Scheifele – Gabe Vilardi
Nikolaj Ehlers – Adam Lowry – Alex Iafallo
Nino Niederreiter – Rasmus Kupari – Cole Perfetti
Dominic Toninato – David Gustafsson – Morgan Barron
Josh Morrissey – Dylan DeMelo
Dylan Samberg – Neal Pionk
Logan Stanley – Colin Miller
Based on reports from the rink, we’re projecting Eric Comrie to start in net, backed up by Connor Hellebuyck. The Jets currently have no healthy extras, but there’s a chance that one (or both) of Colin Miller and Haydn Fleury could play, which would push Ville Heinola to the sidelines. We’ll see what unfolds. (Sportsnet Ken Wiebe reported that Stanley and Miller looked like third pairing based on who stayed out for extra work after morning skate, but we’ll see.)
The Jets are a damn good hockey team. They’ve won three in a row and have points in their past five games, going 4-0-1. They’re a team that’s maintained a really high level of play from the get-go this season, and they have a lot of high-end depth up and down their lineup.
If you’re not at your best when you meet the Jets, chances are you won’t have a very good outcome against them.

Unavailable players

The Flames are without Anthony Mantha, Justin Kirkland and Connor Zary.
The Jets are without Mason Appleton, Hadyn Fleury, Colin Miller and Vladislav Namestnikov.

Head to head

This is the second of three meetings between these clubs this season. The Jets beat the Flames by a 5-3 score in October in Calgary. They’ll finish off their season series next Sunday in Winnipeg.
