Flames Game Day 56: The 270th Battle of Alberta (8pm, SN/360)

One last game before the Olympic break, and it’s a doozy. The Calgary Flames (22-27-6, 50 points) host the Edmonton Oilers (28-21-8, 64 points) for the third-to-last time ever at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Both teams played their last games against the Toronto Maple Leafs; both lost. Now they’re battling to see who will go into the three week break feeling a little bit good about their performance… and who’ll go into it unhappily.
Today’s broadcast begins at 8 p.m. MT on Sportsnet’s national feed, Sportsnet 360 and Sportsnet 960 The Fan.

We’re projecting Devin Cooley to start in net, backed up by Dustin Wolf. The projected extras look to be Hunter Brzustewicz and Brayden Pachal.
The Flames are in an interesting place, folks. They’re 1-4-2 over their last seven games, dating back to the Rasmus Andersson trade. They are a team that works really hard, but has challenges scoring. For better or for worse, they need to play a tight-checking, structured game and wear their opponents down.
They’re not a team that can run and gun. Facing an Oilers team that played (and lost) on Tuesday, it’s a big opportunity to show what they can do against their most bitter rivals.
The Oilers
Projected lines via Daily Faceoff:
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – Connor McDavid – Zach Hyman
Vasily Podkolzin – Leon Draisaitl – Kasperi Kapanen
Matthew Savoie – Josh Samanski – Jack Roslovic
Andrew Mangiapane – Mattias Janmark – Trent Frederic

We’re projecting Tristan Jarry to start in net, backed up by Connor Ingram, who started against Toronto. Their extras look to be Calvin Pickard, Alec Regula and Curtis Lazar.
It’s the second half of a back-to-back for the Oil, who hosted Toronto and lost on Tuesday evening. It was the final game of an eight game homestand for Edmonton that saw them go 4-4-0. The Oilers have had an up and down season this year; they’re obviously a really good hockey team with some really good players, but they still haven’t quite hit their stride this season.
Don’t take penalties against the Oilers. Their power play is terrifying.
Unavailable players
The Flames are without Sam Honzek, Jake Bean, John Beecher and Blake Coleman.
The Oilers are without Adam Henrique.
