Flames Game Day 78: One more trip to Denver (7pm MT, SNW)

10 days ago, the Calgary Flames (32-36-8, 73 points) suffered a pretty one-sided loss to the National Hockey League’s top crew, the Colorado Avalanche (51-16-10, 112 points). It wasn’t pretty. They allowed nine goals. Nobody on the road team had a particular good night. Now it’s the rematch, with the Flames looking for a measure of revenge against a really good hockey team.
Today’s broadcast begins at 7 p.m. MT on Sportsnet West and Sportsnet 960 The Fan.

Via Sportsnet’s Derek Wills on the road in Denver, we’re projecting Dustin Wolf to start in net, backed up by Devin Cooley. The projected healthy extras for Calgary look like Tyson Gross, Ryan Lomberg and Martin Pospisil. Per the club: Kevin Bahl has returned to Calgary to be evaluated for his injury, and Blake Coleman has returned to Dallas for the birth of his child.
The Flames are in the midst of a six game road trip, and they’re 1-2-1 through their first four games. They were not good at all against Colorado, but the overtime loss to Dallas represented their third consecutive pretty good road game. This will sound like a broken record, but the Flames seem to know that they can’t out-skill teams. But they tend to work really hard, play a really hard, structured system designed to wear teams down and force mistakes, and they have enough skill to take advantage of those mistakes from time to time.
But they’re going to need to be at their very best against the Avalanche.
The Avalanche
Projected lines via Daily Faceoff:
Artturi Lehkonen – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Necas
Ross Colton – Brock Nelson – Valeri Nichushkin
Gabriel Landeskog – Nicolas Roy – Joel Kiviranta
Parker Kelly – Jack Drury – Logan O’Connor

Devon Toews – Sam Malinski
Brett Kulak – Josh Manson
Nick Blankenburg – Brent Burns

Via the Denver Gazette’s Evan Rewal: Mackenzie Blackwood starts in net, backed up by Scott Wedgewood. We’re projecting their lone extra healthy skater as Zakhar Bardakov. Nazem Kadri is out for “a few games” with an upper body injury.
The Avalanche are a wagon. They just clinched top spot in the Central Division. They’re a win away from clinching the Presidents’ Trophy. They’re a bit banged up, but Colorado’s probably the scariest opponent in the league right now. Especially at home.
Unavailable players
The Flames are without Sam Honzek, Jake Bean, Jonathan Huberdeau, Joel Hanley, Kevin Bahl and Blake Coleman.
The Avalanche are without Cale Makar and Nazem Kadri.
