Flames Game Day: A day trip to scenic Winnipeg (6pm MT, Flames.com)

The Calgary Flames will begin the back half of their training camp schedule, and a stretch of four games in seven days, on Saturday evening when they visit the Winnipeg Jets.
The Flames have played four games, with their results varying pretty significantly. They’ll be hoping to bounce back from a fairly bland performance in Abbotsford which saw them get behind early and chase the game. The Jets, meanwhile, are still looking for their first victory of the exhibition schedule.
Things get going just after 6 p.m. MT, streaming on the Flames website and over the airwaves on Sportsnet 960 The Fan!
The Flames
The Flames lost to Vancouver on Wednesday, then returned home and made some cuts to their camp roster. They’re now carrying 38 players.
The Flames didn’t skate on Saturday before travelling, but via the club, here’s who’s headed to Winnipeg:
- Forwards: Bishop, Coronato, Frost, Gridin, Honzek, Hunt, Kerins, Kirkland, Klapka, Lomberg, Pospisil and Zary
- Defencemen: Bahl, Cicek, Grushnikov, Hanley, Kuznetsov, Pachal and Parekh
- Goalies: Cooley and Prosvetov
Per Sportsnet’s Pat Steinberg, head coach Ryan Huska indicated that Devin Cooley gets the full 60 minutes in net.
We have to do a bit of guesswork for lines and pairings, but since Steinberg reported lines on Friday (thanks Pat), we can make some eduacted guesses. Some lines at Friday’s practice that included players that are dressing on Saturday included Lomberg-Pospisil-Klapka, Zary-Frost-Coronato and Pachal/Parekh. Presumably we’ll see some mixing and matching as we see a blend of players from the main group and secondary group for this contest.
A lot of the big camp battles are on display in Winnipeg. Backup goalie? Cooley gets his chance to respond to Prosvetov’s strong outing in Abbotsford. Defence? Here’s Kuznetsov, Pachal and Parekh. Fourth line centre? Kerins and Kirkland are both in the lineup. Perhaps we’ll get a bit of clarity after this pre-season contest is complete.
The Jets
Winnipeg has yet to get a W in the pre-season, most recently having their B-squad handed an L by Edmonton on Friday night. They’re icing a more veteran-heavy group on home ice on Saturday evening in the hopes of reversing their poor recent fortunes.

Hey look, Jonathan Toews! And Walker Duehr! And a pretty veteran-heavy Jets group that should be pretty focused on trying to get the Jets a home ice victory.
