From the sounds of it, the Calgary Flames are starting to do their due diligence on players around the NHL with the trade deadline now just four days away.
According to a new report by Daily Faceoff‘s Anthony Di Marco, the Flames have inquired with the Boston Bruins about the availability of right-handed defenceman Brandon Carlo, who is signed through the end of the 2026-27 season at a $4.1 million cap hit.
“Sounds like the Flames have reached out on Bruins defenceman Brandon Carlo. Teams have yet to dive into details, but Calgary is interested,” Di Marco tweeted on Monday. “Not too many players on Boston’s roster not available for the right price.”
Carlo, 28, has averaged 18:47 of ice time through 61 games with the Bruins this season. He has one goal and nine points this season, and both his 45.14 on-ice expected goals percentage and his 42.44 high-danger chance rate at 5-on-5 rank dead last among all Bruins regulars.
The Bruins originally selected Carlo in the second round (No. 37 overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. The Colorado Springs product has spent his entire professional career to date with the Bruins, collecting 29 goals and 109 points through 615 games over parts of nine seasons.
It’s not immediately apparent where Carlo would play in Calgary’s defensive lineup, particularly with Rasmus Andersson still in the fold. Another 2015 second-round pick, Andersson is under contract until the end of the 2025-26 season and is likely to re-sign with the Flames. With MacKenzie Weegar signed long-term and Zayne Parekh knocking on the door, the Flames already have a strong contingent of right-handed defenders. While they could use a few extra RHD in their AHL lineup, Carlo figures to be more than a little redundant on their NHL depth chart — assuming, that is, that Andersson ends up sticking around.
Whatever ends up happening with Carlo, it appears the market for players of his ilk has already been set. Over the weekend, the Colorado Avalanche parted with Calvin de Haan, Juuso Parssinen, and a 2nd and 4th in the 2025 NHL Draft to acquire Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey from the New York Rangers. It’s difficult to envision the Bruins accepting any less for Carlo, especially with extra years remaining on his contract.
Aside from Andersson and Carlo, the Flames could still be active in the defensive market between now and March 7. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman on Monday’s edition of 32 Thoughts – The Podcast, the Flames are actively working to find a new home for Daniil Miromanov, and they could also end up parting ways with veteran stalwart and pending UFA Joel Hanley. There’s plenty of time for things to materialize until the trade deadline, so stay tuned.
