Another member of the Calgary Flames organization is headed to Switzerland for the upcoming World Hockey Championships. On Monday, Hockey Canada announced that Flames head coach Ryan Huska will be an assistant coach on Misha Donskov’s staff.
Huska will be joined by Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery and Los Angeles Kings interim coach D.J. Smith as assistant coaches, and Washington goalie coach Scott Murray. The assistant coaches were first reported by TSN’s Darren Dreger on Friday.

Spencer Carberry, Ryan Huska and DJ Smith also part of Team Canada’s coaching staff.

It’s the second year in a row that Huska has joined Canada’s coaching staff for the Worlds. He’s also been an assistant coach with Canada at the World Juniors in 2011 (under head coach Dave Cameron) and 2012 (under head coach Don Hay).
Since retiring as a player in 2000 after an illustrious one game NHL career with Chicago, Huska has quietly built a very strong coaching resume. He’s been behind a bench continuously since 2003, with runs with WHL Kelowna (assistant, 2002-07; head, 2007-14), AHL Adirondack (head, 2014-15) and AHL Stockton (head, 2015-18) before joining the Flames coaching staff in 2018. He served as an assistant coach for five seasons before being promoted to head coach in 2023.
Huska will be joined on Team Canada by fellow Flames staffers Kent Kobelka (head athletic therapist), Scott Cyr (sports physiotherapist) and Dr. Ian Auld (team physician). They’ll be joined by Devin Cooley (United States), Martin Pospisil (Slovakia) and Olli Maatta as Flames that have officially been announced as going to the World Championships. Adam Klapka participated in the Fortuna Hockey Games, a Worlds precursor event, for Czechia, and he’s been named to their roster for the Beijer Hockey Games in Sweden later this month. He is a strong contender to make their Worlds roster, too. On Monday, Sportsnet’s Eric Francis also reported that Matt Coronato will be joining Team USA, but we’re still waiting on an official announcement on that.
The 2026 World Hockey Championships takes place May 15-31 in Zurich and Fribourg, Switzerland.
