As they begin a quick two game road trip, the Calgary Flames have made some roster moves. Per the club, they’ve recalled forwards Sam Morton and Dryden Hunt from the American Hockey’s Calgary Wranglers. They’ve also sent Rory Kerins back to the Wranglers.
Morton, 26, is a left shot centre that the Flames signed as a college free agent back in 2024. In two seasons in the system, he’s emerged as a really responsible, consistent two-way centre. He has 12 points over 16 games with the Wranglers this season. This is his second recall of his career and first of the season; he made his NHL debut with the Flames at the end of last season and scored a goal.
Hunt, 29, is a left shot winger that joined the Flames in a trade with Toronto back at the 2023 trade deadline. He’s spent three seasons as a really versatile tweener player for the Flames. If you need someone to come up to the NHL and maybe play, Hunt is your guy. At the AHL level, he’s a really effective top six winger that can play either side of the ice. This is his second call-up of the season; he didn’t dress on his earlier call-up. He’s played 33 games for the Flames over the past few seasons.
Kerins, 23, is headed back to the Wranglers after two games with the Flames. He was perfectly fine – quite good in his first game and merely okay in the second – but with the injury to Sam Honzek, it sure does seem like the Flames will shuffle a few things around and try out different things, which means Kerins would probably be a spectator. And if he’s going to be a spectator in the NHL, for both his development and waiver status it’s probably easier to send him back to the AHL to play games with the Wranglers.
With the roster moves, the Flames are up to a 23-man active roster, which currently includes the injured Sam Honzek, of two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 14 forwards. Martin Pospisil and Zayne Parekh are on the injury reserve list.
The Flames face the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday in Chicago.
