Flames make training camp cuts: seven players sent to Wranglers, four on waivers

Following their victory in Seattle on Monday night, the Calgary Flames have made several roster moves to trim down their training camp roster.
Headed to the Calgary Wranglers of the American Hockey League are seven waiver exempt players: forwards Sam Honzek, William Stromgren and Aydar Suniev, defencemen Hunter Brzustewicz, Nick Cicek and Artem Grushnikov, and goaltender Owen Say. They’ve also placed four players on waivers: forwards Sam Morton, Clark Bishop and Dryden Hunt and blueliner Yan Kuznetsov.
It’s the first big-league camp for Suniev and Say, after both signed entry-level deals after their college seasons ended last spring. Suniev showed flashes of brilliance but likely needs a bit of refinement in the AHL, while Say impressed in camp (and stuck around as the fourth goalie so they could have two full practice groups) but he’s headed to learn the pro game.
It’s the second full-time pro camp for Honzek and Brzustewicz. Both looked quite good and had stretches of good play, but both seem to have fell victim to the numbers game. But if the idea was to make an impression in camp: mission accomplished.
Stromgren, Cicek and Grushnikov have been in a few camps. They all had their moments, particularly with Cicek and Grushnikov throwing their weight around in the defensive zone in the games they played, but again, the Flames just had too many players that impressed more in training camp.
Hunt and Bishop are reliable veterans that could provide strong veteran mentorship in the AHL for a young group. And Morton and Kuznetsov performed well and likely made strong impressions, but they were also victims of the numbers game.
The list of waiver exempt players remaining in Flames camp is very short: 2024 first-rounders Zayne Parekh and Matvei Gridin.
With these 11 assignments, the Flames roster is down to 27 players active in camp: three goaltenders, nine defencemen and 15 forwards.
