One of the key members of the Calgary Flames’ leadership group is their nominee for one of the league’s most prestigious leadership and humanitarian honours.
On Friday morning, the club announced forward Jonathan Huberdeau as their nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, which is presented “to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.”
Each club nominates a deserving player, and then the winner is selected by a group consisting of NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and past winners of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy and the NHL Foundation Player Award.
Huberdeau joined the Flames during the 2022 off-season, via a trade with the Florida Panthers, and he’s been pretty involved with a bevy of community organizations and causes since his arrival.
Here’s a snippet from the Flames’ press release announcing Huberdeau’s nomination and discussing two of his programs:
Since joining the Flames, Huberdeau has made Calgary his home and has shown a dedication to his community, evident through his signature initiative, Huby’s Hangout. Each season, Jonathan personally purchases a private suite at the Scotiabank Saddledome, providing game-night experiences, food, and beverages to underserved youth from across Calgary. For many of these children, it’s their first time attending a professional hockey game, an experience often made memorable by post-game visits from Huberdeau himself, where he connects with the kids through conversations, autographs, and photos. This year, he created a new program with teammate Justin Kirkland, The J&J Powerplay, aimed at reducing food insecurity in our community. Together, they cover the cost of food for the Youth Centres of Calgary – an organization created to help youth reach their full potential and help break the cycles of poverty. On top of his work in-season, Jonathan hosts a golf tournament each summer, raising almost $1.5 million for the Cite de la Sante Foundation in his home province of Quebec over the last four years.
Four Flames players have received the King Clancy Memorial Trophy since its inception in 1987-88: Lanny McDonald (1987-88), Joe Nieuwendyk (1994-95), Jarome Iginla (2003-04) and Mikael Backlund (2022-23). No other club has received it more than three times.
Huberdeau joins netminder Devin Cooley, who’s up for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, as the club’s nominees for league awards. Winners will be announced later this spring.
