In advance of Tuesday’s 3 p.m. MT roster deadline, the Calgary Flames placed five players on the NHL’s waiver wire on Monday: goaltender Louis Domingue, defenseman Alex Petrovic, and forwards Justin Kirkland, Buddy Robinson and Byron Froese.
None of the moves are particularly shocking.
“Third String” Domingue was signed to be first goalie up in case of illness or injury. Petrovic, Froese and Robinson have NHL experience, but basically slot in as minor league depth. Kirkland is a good AHLer with some untapped upside, but he didn’t stand out at main camp and needs some refinement on the farm.
Kirkland has already been cut from the camp roster, while the other four will be able to be assigned to the taxi squad (or AHL) after they clear waivers.
Flames camp continues Monday with a scrimmage and concludes on Tuesday. The Flames open their season on Thursday in scenic Winnipeg.
