Flames playoff elimination scenarios – May 5

Photo credit: Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports
Today is the first day that the Calgary Flames can become mathematically eliminated from qualifying for the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs.
The Flames’ playoff hopes rest on a pair of games: Montreal at Ottawa (5 p.m. MT, SN) and Winnipeg at Calgary (7:30 p.m. MT, SN).
- A Montreal win of any kind over Ottawa would give the Canadiens 59 points.
- A Winnipeg win of any kind over Calgary would also give the Jets 59 points and reduce the Flames’ total possible points to either 58 (via a Flames overtime/shootout loss) or 57 (a Flames regulation loss).
Either way, these two outcomes would make it mathematically impossible for the Flames to finish top four in the North Division and would eliminate them from playoff contention.
If Montreal and Winnipeg both win, Calgary is done. If only one of those teams win, the Flames will remain mathematically alive.
