As expected, Calgary Flames prospect Ethan Wyttenbach is one of the 10 Hobey Baker finalists.
On Wednesday afternoon, the NCAA announced the 10 players remaining under consideration for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. To no one’s surprise, the NCAA point-leader, Wyttenbach, was one of the 10 players named. Other players include Trey Augustine, Max Plante, Eric Pohlkamp, Felix Trudeau, James Hagens, Charlie Stramel, Hayden Stavroff, T.J. Hughes, and Gavin McKenna.
You have to imagine that Wyttenbach has a good chance of winning it. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2025 draft by the Flames, the 19-year-old scored 24 goals and 58 points with Quinnipiac this season. His 58 points were the most in NCAA scoring, seven ahead of the next best player, McKenna.
It’s been a whirlwind of a season for the Rosen, New York native, as there have been rumours that he may turn professional. If not, a return to Quinnipiac for his sophomore season seems likely. Additionally, Wyttenbach was named as an ECAC Hockey finalist for both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, two awards that he’ll likely win.
Unfortunately, Wyttenbach is the lone Flames prospect nominee, as Cole Reschny was named as NCHC’s Rookie of the Year. Another Flames’ prospect in the NCAA, Cullen Potter, had a strong year, but had his season end early due to a shoulder injury.
Wyttenbach has a strong chance of winning the Hobey Baker, even if Quinnipiac isn’t in the strongest conference. McKenna, seen as the top draft prospect ahead of June’s draft, also has a legitimate chance of winning. Funnily enough, McKenna is a teammate of Luke Misa at Penn State, the Flames fifth-rounder in 2024. Additionally, Pohlkamp is teammates with Eric Jamieson at Denver, while Hughes is teammates with Henry Mews at Michigan.
Quinnipiac crashed out of their end-of-season tournament rather early, losing in the best-of-three series to Clarkson. However, they’ll likely be invited to the national tournament, which begins later this month. As for the Hobey Baker award, the award will be announced on Apr. 10 during the Frozen Four.
