Calgary Flames prospect Henry Mews has resumed skating as part of his recovery from a season-ending ACL injury he sustained in early November.
Mews, 20, recorded nine points in his first nine games at the University of Michigan before leaving early in his 10th after absorbing a heavy hit by Notre Dame forward Sutter Muzzatti. The Wolverines announced shortly thereafter that Mews would miss the remainder of his freshman season.
A third-round pick (No. 74 overall) of the Flames in the 2024 NHL Draft, Mews split his first post-draft season between the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s and Sudbury Wolves before heading to Michigan. In an interview with Chris Wahl published at CalgaryFlames.com on Thursday, Mews seemingly affirmed that he’ll be back with the Wolverines for the 2026-27 season after taking part in the Flames’ 2026 Development Camp.
“I’ll be ready to go for Dev Camp, which is good news,” Mews said. “I’m going to stay at Michigan the rest of the spring, train and rehab here, then go to Calgary for Development Camp for a couple weeks.”
Mews travelled from Ann Arbor to watch the Flames take on the Detroit Red Wings on Monday. He also met with Flames assistant general managers Brad Pascall and Peter Hanlon that night, in all likelihood to bring them up to date on his recovery, according to Wahl.
“I skated for the first time last week, it put a smile on my face,” Mews added. “It was good to be back on the ice. It’s going very smoothly and everything’s on track, and I’m very happy with how everything’s going.”
Mews spent parts of three seasons with his hometown 67’s to begin his OHL career before being traded to Sudbury midway through the 2024-25 campaign. The 6’1” righty ranked third among all OHL defencemen in scoring in his final junior season, finishing behind only Zayne Parekh and Sam Dickinson.
One of only five right-handed defence prospects in the Flames’ entire developmental system, Mews will remain affiliated with Calgary as long as he remains in college. Whenever he chooses to sign with the Flames, he’ll be eligible to join the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers.
