The season after the Calgary Flames selected blueliner Zayne Parekh at ninth overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, we think we know a thing or two about his game.
Simply put: the kid can put up a ton of points.
Over the weekend, Parekh played three games for the Ontario Hockey League’s Saginaw Spirit. He had an assist on Thursday in Peterborough, two goals and an assist on Friday against Kingston, and three goals and an assist on Sunday against Ottawa. All-told, he posted five goals and three assists over three games.
That offensive outburst earned him accolades, as the OHL named him their Player of the Week for the past seven day period.
Through 39 games this season, Parekh has 21 goals and 38 assists for 59 points.
  • 21 goals has him tied for 25th in the OHL, and leading all OHL defencemen outright.
  • 38 assists has him tied for 11th in the OHL, and tied for third among OHL defencemen.
  • 59 points has him tied for 16th in the OHL, and second among OHL defencemen behind fellow Flames prospect Henry Mews of Sudbury.
A product of Nobleton, Ontario, Parekh is in his third full season in the OHL with Saginaw. He nearly doubled his points-per-game production from his rookie season to last year, going from 0.74 to 1.45. Despite missing a bit of the start of this season due to being with the Flames at their training camp, despite missing some time due to a short suspension and a trip to Hockey Canada’s World Junior selection camp mid-season, and despite purposefully putting more emphasis on his defensive game this season… Parekh’s points-per-game production has had a slight uptick.
Like we said, Parekh is really good at putting up points. We’re fascinated to see what he can accomplish between now and the end of his OHL tenure.
