A Calgary Flames prospect was suspended Friday.
Zayne Parekh of the Saginaw Spirit was suspended for a game Friday afternoon, the Ontario Hockey League announced. He received a match penalty for a cross to the face of a Windsor Spitfire player. The right-shot defenceman will miss the Spirit’s game against the Brampton Steelheads on Saturday.
The Nobleton, Ontario-native made his Ontario Hockey League debut in 2022-23, scoring 21 goals and 37 points in 50 games, along with six goals and nine points in 11 postseason games.
In 2023-24, Parekh scored 33 goals and 96 points in 66 games in his second Ontario Hockey League season, spending a large chunk of that season as a 17-year-old. In the postseason, Parekh scored two goals and 11 points in 13 games, as his Spirit fell to the London Knights, the eventual OHL champions. However, the two games the Knights lost in the postseason, it was to the Spirit.
The two teams met in the Memorial Cup, with the Knights picking up the win in the round-robin. After defeating the Moose Jaw Warriors in the semifinal, the Spirit and Knights played for the eighth time after the regular season, with the Spirit winning their first Memorial Cup.
Parekh is off to another good start in his age-18 season, scoring eight goals and 29 points in 21 games. Assuming he stays healthy the rest of the season, the right-shot defenceman is on pace for 24 goals and 88 points, down from his production last season.
This season, the Spirit have a 13-10-1 record with 27 points, fifth in the Western Conference of the Ontario Hockey League. Their leading scorer is Micahel Misa, brother of Flame draft pick Luke Misa. Michael is a top prospect in the 2025 draft and has 23 goals and 46 points in 23 games.
Sadly, Parekh will miss that head-to-head matchup, but returns on Sunday as the Spirit heads down Interstate 69 to face off against the Sarnia Sting.
