The Calgary Flames have re-signed a pair of depth forwards. The club has announced, in a release also announcing the previously-reported return of Buddy Robinson, the re-signing of Zac Rinaldo and Byron Froese.
Per sources, both players receive pretty decent salaries at the AHL level:
- Froese is $350,000 in 2020-21 and $400,000 in 2021-22
- Rinaldo is $350,000
Froese, 29, came to the Flames a year ago as a free agent and served the whole season as Stockton’s captain. He was rewarded with a spot on the Flames’ expanded playoff roster, and it seems likely that he’ll be relied upon to mentor the youngsters on the farm once again. He had 19 goals and 42 points in 46 games for Stockton, and could be slotted into the Flames’ lineup as a depth option if needed.
Rinaldo, 30, came to the Flames a year ago as a PTO and signed as depth. He was a perfectly acceptable 13th forward, playing 19 games and scoring three goals and five points. (He also played 14 AHL games in Stockton, generating seven assists.) This is a low-risk signing, as Rinaldo can play in the bottom six and not be embarrassed, or never play and his development won’t stall.
