In advance of their Monday matinee against the Anaheim Ducks, the Calgary Flames have made a roster move. The club has recalled forward Glenn Gawdin from the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat. In a corresponding move, Derek Ryan has been placed on the injury reserve.
Gawdin, 22, was a fourth round pick of the St. Louis Blues back in the 2015 NHL Draft. But the Blues lost their sole AHL affiliation in 2017-18 and decided not to sign Gawdin, so he went back to the WHL for his overage year and destroyed major junior. Playing alongside Alexei Heponiemi and Tyler Steenbergen with the Swift Current Broncos, he put up 125 points and narrowly lost the WHL scoring title. The Flames signed him early in that season.
Now in his second AHL campaign, Gawdin has 42 points in 46 AHL games and is one of the top prospects in the Flames system. This will be his first call-up.
Dealing with an illness, Ryan is on IR retroactive to Feb. 13. He’s eligible to return as early as Friday’s game at home against the Boston Bruins.
