Earlier today, the Calgary Flames sent Nicklas Grossmann to the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat. With two open roster spots, some cap space, and just 12 healthy forwards, it seemed likely that another move was going to happen.

Well, at least one move has seemingly happened. According to the AHL’s transactions page – usually a reliable source of information – the Flames have recalled Linden Vey from Stockton.

Vey, 25, joined the Flames as a free agent this summer with the goal of giving the team more versatility in their bottom six group. A right-handed shot that can play both center and the wing, he was one of the final cuts of this fall’s training camp, getting assigned to Stockton on Oct. 11 (the day before the regular season began). 

He’s put up nine points in eight games with the Heat thus far and projects to be a decent option to fill a bottom six utility spot with Lance Bouma and Kris Versteeg injured. In the event that he doesn’t play, he’s of the age where he’s probably not going to progress a heck of a lot further. In other words, he’s almost an ideal 13th forward for the time being.

The AHL site also lists a couple transactions involving Tyler Wotherspoon, but we’re inclined to believe that recall isn’t happening primarily because (a) the transactions look glitchy and (b) recalling Wotherspoon as an eighth defender the same day they demoted Grossmann wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense.
