The Calgary Flames have made possibly their final roster move of the 2017-18 season. The club announced that it has recalled forward Spencer Foo from the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat.

Foo, 24, has spent the entirety of this season in Stockton after being one of the bigger prizes of the 2017 spring college free agent class. The Edmonton product spent three productive years at Union College before going pro, signing with the Flames in late June after a protracted bidding process. He didn’t have an amazing training camp, but since the mid-point of the AHL season his game has really turned a corner. In 59 AHL games he has 20 goals and 37 points; he had six goals and 13 points in the first 30 games, and 14 goals and 24 points in the second 29 games. He’s a right-shot forward and the Flames don’t have too many of those that can score at the NHL level, so he’ll get a shot to potentially angle towards a full-time roster spot in the fall.

Foo won’t play tonight, meaning his debut will likely come on Saturday night when he suits up for the Flames against Edmonton, his hometown team that he spurned to sign with Calgary.

The recall uses up the Flames’ fourth and final “regular” (non-emergency conditions) recall of the season. The other four were used to bring up David Rittich, Rasmus Andersson and Jon Gillies. A lack of “regular” recalls wouldn’t prevent the Flames from bringing in Dillon Dube, for example, in the event the Kelowna Rockets are eliminated from the Western Hockey League playoffs.
