As expected, the Calgary Flames made a minor roster move on Friday morning. The club has returned forward Matthew Phillips to the American Hockey League’s Stockton Heat.
All-told, Phillips spent three days on the NHL roster and was a healthy scratch twice. He was recalled to be the extra forward with Matthew Tkachuk nursing an injury. That said, there was value to him coming in and being a sponge for a few days so there won’t be any surprises when he’s inevitably thrown into the lineup. He is, after all, Stockton’s leading scorer and one of the most impressive offensive players in the entire AHL.
The move drops the Flames’ active roster to 22 players (13 forwards, 7 defensemen and 2 goaltenders), with Austin Czarnik, Sam Bennett and Juuso Valimaki remaining on the long-term injury reserve list for the time being.
