The Calgary Flames have made their third round selection in the 2016 NHL Draft. They’ve selected defenseman Adam Fox of the U.S. National Development Program at 66th overall.

The third American-born player selected by the Flames so far this draft, Fox is from New York state and has spent the last two seasons with the U.S. Development Team. A right-handed, puck-moving defender, he broke the USNDP defenseman scoring record in 2015-16 with 59 points in 64 games (along with 22 points in 25 games against USHL clubs). He’s not massive at 5’10” and 185 pounds, but he fits nicely in with the style of play the league (and the Flames) are emphasizing in recent seasons).

He was ranked 50th among North American skaters by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service
and 36th by Future Considerations, who projected him as a “middle-pairing offensive defenseman” in their Draft Guide. He’s committed to Harvard University for next season, so we know he’s (a) wicked smaht and (b) going to have time to round out his game and round out physically.
