The Calgary Flames have made their first selection of the 2025 NHL Draft. At 18th overall, the Flames have selected centre Cole Reschny of the Western Hockey League’s Victoria Royals.
Reschny was the 25th-ranked North American skater by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service. He was ranked 16th by Daily Faceoff and 17th by FC Hockey.
The 18-year-old Reschny is a left shot centre listed at 5’11” and 183 pounds. A product of Macklin, Saskatchewan, he scored 26 goals and 66 assists for 92 points this past season for the Royals. He also represented Canada at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the Under-18 Worlds, capturing a pair of gold medals. He’s committed to the University of North Dakota for the coming fall, where he’ll join fellow Flames prospect Cade Littler.
Here’s what Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis had to say about Reschny in his latest draft rankings:
Reschny is coming off an outstanding showing at the U-18 World Championship. He didn’t start the tournament on time, but he was a big reason why Canada won gold. Reschny’s ability to produce no matter the situation makes him so intriguing. He’s not huge, but he makes up for it with explosive speed and elusiveness, making him a tough player to contain on the rush. He’s an outstanding playmaker, maybe one of the best in this class. Reschny’s competitive nature will take him far, and he has proven internationally he can be an offensive catalyst with other high-end prospects.
Over at Canucks Army, their prospects guru Dave Hall had this to say about Reschny’s game as part of a lengthy breakdown of his game:
Drawing comparisons to former WHLer Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Reschny plays a game catered to the playmaking side of things.Equipped with one of the higher IQs in the draft, he’s constantly scanning the ice, looking for his next lane to provide a quick thread. With the pass in mind, he often jumps ahead to make the play that few see, threading quick one-touches, cross-ice tap-ins or cheeky no-looks from behind the goal line. His ability to find the right pass is at the top of this class, and that’s evidenced by his 66 assists (sixth in the WHL). He’s patient with the puck and doesn’t force the issue when it comes to his plays. With soft hands, terrific vision and a calmness to his game, he elevates the play of his linemates.
The 18th overall selection was originally allocated to the New Jersey Devils, but the Flames received it from the Devils as part of the Jacob Markstrom trade last summer. (The Flames also received Kevin Bahl in that transaction.)
