Flames select Jack Beck at 168th overall

The Calgary Flames have made another pick at the 2021 NHL Draft, and completed the final unfinished portion of the 2019 trade that saw Milan Lucic join the Flames. In the sixth round, with a pick acquired earlier today from Los Angeles, at 168th overall they have selected winger Jack Beck.
Beck was ranked 82nd among North American skaters by Central Scouting. He was unranked by FC Hockey.
He’s a 5’11”, 165 pound left shooting winger who played in 2019-20 for the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s, but didn’t play in 2020-21 due to the pandemic. He had seven goals and 12 assists in 56 games for the 67’s a season ago.
The selling point for Beck appears to be his potential, as he was smart enough and trusted enough by Ottawa’s coaching staff to play on their second line in 2019-2 despite being a rookie.
In his rookie season, we found out that Beck can skate. He has quick feet and excellent acceleration with speed to burn that can take him around the outside of the defence when needed. He didn’t have many chances to use his speed with the 67’s considering he was the third option on his line, but that allowed him to show off his playmaking ability. Even though the points didn’t come as he would have liked, he was involved in the play and created plenty of scoring chances for his linemates.
For those tracking it, the final tally for the Edmonton/Calgary swap from July 2019 is James Neal to Edmonton for Milan Lucic, 89th overall (Cameron Whynot) and 168th overall (Jack Beck).
