The Calgary Flames have made their fifth selection of the 2025 NHL Draft. At 144th overall, the Flames have selected left winger Ethan Wyttenbach from the United States Hockey League’s Sioux Falls Stampede.
Wyttenbach is a left shot forward listed at 5’10” and 180 pounds, and he’s a February 2007 birthday. A product of Roslyn, New York, on Long Island, he had 24 goals and 27 assists for 51 points in 40 games with Sioux Falls. He came up through Long Island prep school hockey, playing in the Long Island Gulls system, the same organization that Matt Coronato spent some time in during his journey to the USHL’s Chicago Steel and Harvard University.
Wyttenbach may be best known to the broader hockey world as the inaugural winner of the USHL’s Gaudreau Award.
The award was established to recognize the player who best embodies the traits and attributes of Matthew – who spent two seasons (2011-13) in Omaha – and Johnny, who spent the 2010-11 season with Dubuque. Those traits include excellence on the ice, spirit of the game, care and responsibility.
He’s committed to Quinnipiac University for the 2026-27 season, and presumably he’s headed back to the USHL for the 2025-26 campaign.
Wyttenbach was the 185th-ranked North American skater by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service. He was ranked 125th by FC Hockey in their final rankings.
Here’s what Elite Prospects’ draft guide had on Wyttenbach:
Details drive Wyttenbach’s game. He effectively supports and spaces the ice in all three zones, getting open for passes before quickly advancing the puck to a teammate in an even better position. With well-timed dashes into the slot and deceptive release, he has pro-level goalscoring, too. Rounding out his toolkit is sturdiness and impressive battle level.
The Flames have two picks remaining in the 2025 NHL Draft.
