The Calgary Flames have agreed to terms on a two-year, entry-level contract with 6’3″ goaltending prospect Arsenii Sergeev, the club announced Monday morning.
Sergeev, 22, posted a 19-9-4 record, a .919 save percentage, a 2.54 goals-against average, and four shutouts in 33 games at Penn State University in the 2024-25 season, helping the Nittany Lions make it all the way to the Frozen Four.
The Flames confirmed that Sergeev’s new contract starts in the 2025-26 season and carries an average annual value of $866,250. Also on Monday, the Flames officially inked Denver Pioneers captain and Calgary kid Carter King to a one-year ELC.
The Flames originally selected Sergeev in the seventh round (No. 205 overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft. The Yaroslavl, Russia product spent his draft year with the NAHL’s Shreveport Mudbugs before making the jump to the USHL with the Tri-City Storm in the 2021-22 season.
Sergeev began his college career at the University of Connecticut in the 2022-23 season, posting an 11-6-1 record and a .912 save percentage in 20 games while forming a tandem with Logan Terness. However, Sergeev took on more of a backup role as a sophomore and ultimately transferred to Penn State for his junior year.
The move proved to be beneficial for all involved, as Sergeev took full control of the reins with the Nittany Lions and led them on their deepest run in program history. Despite only having three NHL-affiliated prospects, and all seventh-round picks to boot, Penn State defeated Maine and UConn (Sergeev’s old team) in the NCAA Tournament before falling 3-1 to Boston University in the national semifinals.
Sergeev concludes his three-year NCAA career with a 38-23-5 record and a .916 save percentage in 68 games with UConn and Penn State.
