The Calgary Flames have signed 2024 second-round pick Jacob Battaglia to a three-year, entry-level contract, the club announced Saturday morning.
Battaglia, who turned 19 on St. Patrick’s Day, collected 40 goals and 90 points in 68 games with the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs during the 2024-25 regular season. He added a pair of assists in Kingston’s 4-1 victory over the Sudbury Wolves on Friday night to open the first round of the OHL playoffs.
The Flames originally selected Battaglia with the No. 62 overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, using the selection they received from the Dallas Stars in exchange for defenceman Chris Tanev. Per the official club release, Battaglia’s entry-level contract carries an average annual value of $931,700.
Battaglia is nicknamed “Bates” despite being of no relation to former Carolina Hurricanes forward Bates Battaglia. The 6’1″, 202-pound forward hails from Mississauga, Ontario and shoots left.
The Flames selected 10 players at the 2024 NHL Draft. They’ve now signed their top four picks to entry-level deals: Zayne Parekh, Matvei Gridin, Andrew Basha, and Battaglia. Their fifth pick, Henry Mews, is all but certain to leave the OHL for the NCAA next season.
Battaglia made his debut with the Frontenacs in the 2022-23 season, collecting seven goals and 27 points in 66 games as an OHL rookie. He improved to 31 goals and 65 points in 67 games as a sophomore, prompting the Flames to take him with one of the final picks of the second round.
In his draft-plus-one season, Battaglia tied Tuomas Uronen (VGK) for the team scoring lead in Kingston. Bolstered in large part by Battaglia’s contributions, the top-heavy Frontenacs ended up finishing second in the OHL’s East Division and sixth in the league with a 40-20-8 record and 88 points in 68 games.
The Frontenacs currently lead the Wolves one game to zero in the first round of the OHL playoffs, with Game 2 slated for Sunday afternoon in Kingston at 2:00 p.m. ET.
