The Calgary Flames have reportedly added to their blueline depth. Originally reported by the 2 Mutts Podcast, the club has inked defenseman Alex Petrovic to a one year, two-way deal worth a league minimum $700,000 at the NHL level.
The appeal of the 28-year-old Petrovic to Calgary seems obvious: he’s big, shoots right, and has 263 NHL dates on his resume from his time with Florida and Edmonton. He’s a reliable two-way presence and plays a responsible game. He’s probably ear-marked either for Stockton as depth, or for a third pairing or seventh defender role as NHL depth. Either way, it’s a depth signing.
And Petrovic, who grew up in Edmonton and played his junior in Red Deer, gets to return to his home province to potentially continue his NHL career.
It’s a low-cost, low-risk signing, and makes a lot of sense.
