According to the team’s official Twitter account, the Flames have inked forward Anthony Peluso to a one-year contract. Peluso, who turned 29 years old in April, will be on a two-way deal with a $650k cap hit in the NHL.

Peluso was originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2007 NHL draft. He never played a game with the Blues and was claimed off of waivers by the Winnipeg Jets in 2013. That’s where he spent the majority of his career. Over parts of four seasons, Peluso played 142 games, picking up four goals, 14 points, and 209 penalty minutes. He played two games with the Washington Capitals last season, but none during their Stanley Cup playoff run.

This isn’t anything more than a minor league signing. Peluso is around to punch faces in the AHL and serve as potential depth for if the Flames ever feel that they need to recall a fighter. Garnet Hathaway is Calgary’s “fighter” right now, so Peluso would be the backup in the minors available for a recall if the team feels it necessary.

Travis Hamonic led the Flames in fights last year with seven, Hathaway dropped the gloves six times, and the recently-departed Troy Brouwer and Tanner Glass each fought three times.
