The Calgary Flames have added a netminder in free agency. Per multiple reports, they’ve signed Russian goaltender Ivan Prosvetov to a one year, one-way contract worth $950,000.
The signing was first reported by Frank Seravalli, but had been rumoured since late May, when a Russian outlet indicated that the netminder was about to get out of his KHL contract and that the Flames were the front-runners for his services.
Adding Prosvetov to the fold gives the Flames five goaltenders under contract for 2025-26. Dustin Wolf is the undisputed top netminder for the NHL club. Arsenii Sergeev and Owen Say are first-year pros destined for the AHL or ECHL. Devin Cooley and Prosvetov will likely battle for the role as Wolf’s understudy in the NHL, with the other playing with the Wranglers.
Both Prosvetov and Cooley are on one-way deals. All that means is that one of them will make NHL money with the Wranglers.
The 26-year-old Prosvetov is a product of Moskva, Russia. He came over to North America in 2016 and played a couple years of junior in the United States, playing with the NAHL’s Minnesota Magicians and the USHL’s Youngstown Phantoms before heading to the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit after being drafted. He was originally selected by the Arizona Coyotes in 2018.
From there, Prosvetov established himself as a bit of a tweener. He had four consecutive seasons where he got short NHL stints but otherwise was a reliable AHL netminder; three seasons split between the Coyotes and the AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners and the last spent split between the Colorado Avalanche and the AHL’s Colorado Eagles. He signed a multi-year deal with the KHL’s CSKA Moskva during the 2024 off-season, but was able to negotiate an exit from that deal to explore NHL opportunities this summer. He posted a .920 save percentage in 38 games with CSKA Moskva.
In the AHL, Prosvetov has established himself as a pretty reliable netminder. His career save percentage is .898 over 146 AHL appearances, but in his most recent AHL season, 2023-24, he posted a .921 save percentage. In 24 NHL games, he’s gone 8-9-2 with a .881 save percentage.
