Flames to wear red ‘Saddledome tribute’ alternate jersey in 2026-27: report

A new league-wide alternate jersey program is set to launch for the 2026-27 season and, as a result, the Calgary Flames are expected to have a brand-new alternate jersey, per a report from the fine folks at Icethetics.
The National Hockey League is expected to launch a league-wide “Hometown Remix” line of alternate jerseys, similar to the NBA’s City Edition and MLB’s City Connect initiatives. The program follows in the footsteps of two waves of Reverse Retro jerseys.
- In 2020-21, the Flames introduced a revised version of their black horsehead jersey – better known as “Blasty” – that was worn regularly from 1998-2006 and originally worn to commemorate The Year of the Cowboy. Blasty’s short-term return was popular enough that it became the team’s full-time alternate in 2022-23.
- In 2022-23, the Flames introduced a black version of their old pedestal jersey sets that they used from 1995-2000. It was not nearly as beloved as Blasty.
On Sunday, Icethetics released a video on their YouTube channel which discussed what’s known about all 32 Hometown Remix jerseys for next season. Their revelation regarding the Flames wasn’t a huge shocker: it’ll be red, as will the alternate jersey of the Detroit Red Wings.
“The Calgary Flames will also be red, and I’m told there’s a bit of a Saddledome tribute, as the team embarks on their final season in the old building, an arena-themed jersey would be a first in NHL history. I’m eager to see how they pull that off.”
The “Saddledome tribute” rumour is consistent with the Flames’ broader plans to commemorate the club’s final season in the Scotiabank Saddledome before they move to Scotia Place for the 2027-28 season. And chatter of a new red jersey bubbled up following a Flames season ticket-holder event early last season; if such a jersey was intended to be part of a league-wide program, it would make sense why we haven’t heard more details since then – approvals for new designs can take awhile.
If the Reverse Retro launch is anything to judge this by, we can expect formal announcements of the Hometown Remix program and individual jerseys closer to the start of the season. We’ll also say one thing to fans nervous about Blasty potentially disappearing: we don’t know one way or the other if that’s the case. During each of the past two seasons of Reverse Retros, the Flames used two alternates – and four different jersey designs overall – so we’ll wait and see what gets announced.
