The Calgary Flames have made a very big splash in the trade market on Wednesday night.
Per multiple reports, the Flames have traded veteran blueliner MacKenzie Weegar to the Utah Mammoth in exchange for defenceman Olli Maatta, prospect Jonathan Castagna, and three 2026 second-round selections.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman was the first to report on the potential trade, which was pending agreeing to waive his full no-trade clause. Sportsnet’s Eric Francis was the first to report that Weegar had waived his no-trade clause, leading for the trade to come to fruition.
The 32-year-old Weegar is a right shot defenceman, originally drafted in the seventh round of the 2013 NHL Draft by the Florida Panthers. He was acquired by the Flames in the Matthew Tkachuk trade in July 2022. He’s in the third year of an eight-year deal carrying a $6.25 million cap hit. He has three goals and 21 points in 60 games this season.
The 31-year-old Maatta is a left shot defenceman, originally drafted in the first round of the 2012 NHL Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was acquired by Utah from Detroit in October 2024 in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick. He’s played 783 NHL games between Pittsburgh, Chicago, Los Angeles, Detroit and Utah. He’s in the first year of a three-year deal carrying a $3.5 million cap hit. He has zero goals and one point in 22 games this season.
The 20-year-old Castagna is a left shot centre, originally drafted in the third round of the 2023 NHL Draft by Utah. A product of Etobicoke, Ontario, he’s in his junior year with Cornell University. He has 14 goals and 32 points in 29 NCAA games this season.
The three 2026 second-round picks would be Utah’s, the NY Rangers’, and Ottawa’s. The Mammoth, back when they were the Coyotes, acquired the Rangers’ 2026 second-round pick in a trade for Ty Emberson in July 2022. They acquired the Senators’ 2026 second-round pick in the Jakob Chychrun trade in March 2023, also back when the Mammoth were still the Coyotes.
We’ll have more on this story as it develops.
The 2026 NHL trade deadline is Fri., Mar. 6 at 1 p.m. MT.
