The Calgary Flames have made a big move at the tail-end of trade deadline day. Per multiple reports, the Flames have traded forward Nazem Kadri to the Colorado Avalanche, along with a 2027 fourth-round pick, in exchange for a conditional 2028 first-round pick, a conditional 2027 second-round pick, forward Victor Olofsson and forward prospect Max Curran.
The Flames have retained 20% of Kadri’s cap hit, or $1.4 million, for the remainder of its lifespan.
Kadri is a 35-year-old centre. He’s in the fourth year of a seven-year contract carrying a $7 million AAV, which he signed as a free agent in the 2022 off-season. His deal carries a 13-team no-trade list. He is the Flames’ offensive leader in 2025-26, with 41 points through 61 games.
An Ontario kid, Kadri was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round, ninth overall, in the 2009 NHL Draft. He spent 10 seasons with the Leafs before moving to the Colorado Avalanche in a July 2019 trade. He spent three seasons with the Avalanche in his first tour of duty, culminating in a Stanley Cup victory in 2022. He left the Avalanche as a free agent, joining the Flames as a free agent in August 2022 – the Flames traded Sean Monahan to Montreal with a first-round pick to open the cap space for Kadri’s signing.
In four seasons with the Flames, Kadri has consistently been their most dangerous offensive player. In 307 games with the Flames, he had 100 goals and 239 points. Since the start of 2022-23, Kadri leads the Flames in goals (by 24 over Blake Coleman), assists (by 10 over Jonathan Huberdeau) and points (by 45 over Huberdeau).
In exchange, the Flames get 30-year-old winger Olofsson, 19-year-old unsigned centre Max Curran, a conditional first-rounder in 2028 and a conditional second-rounder in 2027.
Olofsson is a 30-year-old winger from Sweden who’s a pending unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He carries a $1.575 million cap hit. A free agent addition last summer, he has 25 points in 60 games this season with Colorado.
Curran is a 19-year-old centre from Czechia who was Colorado’s fifth-round pick, 161st overall, in the 2024 NHL Draft. He’s currently with the Edmonton Oil Kings, where he has 41 points in 31 games. He also represented Czechia at the World Juniors.
Kadri has been a frequent subject of trade rumours in recent weeks. His departure continues a trend that’s seen a slew of veterans shipped out of Calgary for picks and prospects since Craig Conroy became general manager in May 2023.
