Back on Mar. 2, the Calgary Flames acquired minor league goalie Michael McNiven from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for future considerations. On deadline day, they got those future considerations back when they sent McNiven to the Ottawa Senators.
McNiven was an extra goalie in Montreal’s system without a place to play, so the Flames took on him and his contract. Three weeks later, Ottawa had some need for some minor league depth, so McNiven was a good fit for their needs. The Flames open up a spot on their 50 contract limit, and the Senators get a depth goalie for their farm system.
McNiven had been on Stockton’s roster for the past few weeks, but hadn’t dressed as the Heat net remained tended by Dustin Wolf and Adam Werner.
