Flames trade rumours: asking price for Rasmus Andersson last season was a first and a ‘good prospect’

Following the trade of Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild, Calgary Flames defenceman Rasmus Andersson is probably the most attractive blueliner likely available in the trade market. And so it shouldn’t be shocking that trade chatter is reportedly picking up, and that Andersson is the topic of a couple of the Thoughts in Elliotte Friedman’s 32 Thoughts latest column over at Sportsnet’s website.
In Friedman’s pre-Christmas installment, he dug into a prior asking price for Andersson’s services and some interesting context spilling out of Craig Conroy’s 2024 trade deadline experiences.
Here’s Friedman:
17. I’m careful writing about Rasmus Andersson, because I don’t want him telling Eric Francis I have no idea what I’m talking about (and Eric gleefully writing it). The Flames were looking for a first-rounder and a good prospect for him last season. Back then, he wasn’t a rental, so we’ll see if the market’s changed.18. One thing the Flames (and other teams) learned from the Noah Hanifin deal: don’t give permission for another team to talk to your player unless you have a trade you like. If you do it the other way around, you’re stuck talking to one team. This way, no one can officially talk until you have something you really like.
Now, there are factors that could move that asking price up or down since last season, friends.
Driving the price down is obviously that Andersson is in the final year of his contract and is slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. So if you’re ponying up for his services, you might only get him for a single playoff run and the Flames are handing over the “will he re-sign?” risk onto your team.
Driving the price up are other factors, though. A year ago, Andersson was riding the struggle bus and not really playing as well as he (or the Flames) wanted. This season, he’s been excellent, and has been the Flames’ best player through 35 games. And you can make a case that his dwindling contract time left could be an asset, as the Flames could probably be cajoled to retain some salary and make his already palatable $4.55 million cap hit even lower. He’s also going to likely play for Sweden at the Olympics, something very few potentially available players can hang their hat on.
Andersson is having a heck of a year, with 25 points through 35 games this season. Getting his services for a stretch drive with his current cap hit would be quite exciting. Getting him at an even lower cap hit would be even better. We are not insiders here, but we’re not entirely sure that the market forces would be pushing the Flames’ prior asking price for Andersson down given how the season has gone for him so far.
We’re currently in a roster freeze that’s in effect until 12:01 a.m. local time on Sun., Dec. 28. The trade deadline is 3 p.m. MT on Fri., Mar. 6.
