Gang, it certainly feels like the clock is ticking on Rasmus Andersson’s tenure with the Calgary Flames. And as things seem to be heating up on the trade front, various insiders are beginning to chime in on how things are progressing.
On Friday morning, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman and Kyle Bukauskas released a new edition of the 32 Thoughts podcast, with Friedman following up on their discussion from earlier in the week regarding the Flames’ desire to get a move done soon.
It sounds like Andersson now shares that desire.
Here’s Friedman:
Well we said on Monday’s podcast that Calgary had indicated that they wanted this trade done before the Olympic break, which is three weeks today [Thursday]… There’s an Olympic trade deadline February 4th, and I believe the Flames want the deal done and now what I also believe is Rasmus Andersson would like the trade done by then, too.
So I think there’s a lot of effort. There’s been some reports this week about Boston. I definitely think the Bruins are involved… I think they’re in there. The toughest thing is always to tell where it is at a particular moment. When it comes to the Bruins and the Flames, I’ve heard it’s on, it’s off, it’s on, it’s off. I know there was some people who thought that at one time it was pretty close, then it backed away. We’ll see where it goes. There definitely is mutual interest there.
I think another team that is poking around this is Vegas. Vegas liked Rasmus Andersson last year. They couldn’t get, they didn’t get a deal done. I don’t think it ever really got close to there. But I still think Vegas is lurking around, I suspect Dallas, too, and I always assume that there are teams I’m not aware of. I always believe that there are teams fishing around there that I’m not aware of. But that one, of all the talk right now, Vancouver is another team that’s kind of in the middle of everything right now, but I think the hottest situation in terms of wanting to get something done by both team and player, I think it’s Andersson in Calgary.
Bukauskas asked about the possibility of an contract extension being involved. Or would Andersson just be a rental? Friedman indicated “Both options are on the table.”
I think it depends on where he could go, I think it depends on what a team could offer, and I think it also depends on how Andersson feels about the city. So I think both options are available, yes and no. How’s that for narrowing it down?
Friedman added that he suspects that an extension would be involved if Boston is Andersson’s destination. Friedman indicated Andersson re-upping with the Flames would be “unlikely.”
We’ll have more on this saga as it develops.
The Flames have a travel day on Friday and are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host the New York Islanders.
