Per multiple reports, the Calgary Flames have traded Sam Bennett and a 2022 sixth round pick to the Florida Panthers for a 2022 second round pick and Swedish prospect Emil Heineman.
Bennett, 24, was the Flames’ first round pick (4th overall) at the 2014 NHL Draft. He developed a reputation as a strong playoff performer, but an inconsistent and occasionally frustrating regular season player. He heads to Florida as a pending restricted free agent.
Heineman, 19, was Florida’s second round pick (43rd overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft. He’s a left shot winger from Leksand, Sweden currently playing in the SHL playoffs for Leksands IF. He has 13 points in 43 games as a teenager in the SHL; that made him 13th on his team in scoring.
All-in-all, it’s a fantastic return for a player the club was likely losing to Seattle in the expansion draft.
