Folks, the Calgary Flames now have an opponent for the first round of the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs. By virtue of finishing third in the round robin, the Dallas Stars will face the Flames in a best-of-seven series.
Dallas beat St. Louis 2-1 in a shootout on Sunday afternoon to cement third spot in the Western Conference’s round robin pool.
The Flames have never met Dallas in the playoffs, but they did meet the Minnesota North Stars in their third-ever playoff series after relocation from Atlanta. The North Stars beat the Flames in six games in the 1981 Stanley Cup semi-final round, ending the magical playoff run of the first relocation year that saw the club win their first two playoff rounds.
This will be the third consecutive post-season for the Flames featuring a team that also relocated, following Colorado in 2019 (relocated from Quebec) and Winnipeg last week (relocated from Atlanta).
The schedule for the first round is expected to be announced late Sunday or early Monday following the completion of the Qualifying Round.
