Welcome to the yearly wrap up of the top read articles over the last year!
If there’s one thing Elliotte Freidman is good at, it’s being a wealth of insider information regarding the ins and outs of the NHL.
And with his weekly 31 thoughts column during the season, he dropped a big nugget about a past Flames draft.
That article, penned by me on June 27, was the 16th most-read article this year.
In the 2013 draft, the Calgary Flames took a run at the first overall pick and the opportunity to take Nathan MacKinnon first overall. The deal, put together by then-GM Jay Feaster, saw Calgary offer picks six, 22 and 28 — all in the first round — to the Avs for MacKinnon.
Here’s what I wrote about the attempted deal:
While the Avalanche clearly declined the deal and opted to select Nathan MacKinnon, it would’ve been a franchise-altering draft for the Flames had they been able to make the trade. It should be without a doubt that the Flames would’ve selected MacKinnon first overall, but instead only hit on one of three draft picks from that first round.
Sean Monahan is a great consolation prize and has gone on to have a very successful career with the Flames scoring 194 goals and 411 points in 541 games in the seven years since the draft.
