Welcome to the yearly wrap up of the top read articles over the last year!
If there’s one thing the Calgary Flames love, it’s checking in on nearly every player available. They always, in some sense of the term, to be sniffing around the big name players in the market.
Just last year they had been hunting Taylor Hall. And with the NHL season heading to the offseason, the Flames were rumoured to be in on everybody.
That article, penned by FlamesNation editor Ryan Pike on Sept. 17, was the 23rd most-read article this year.
Calgary needed a goalie, and that was clear. In the article Pike noted how Calgary had reportedly been connected to Jacob Markstrom, Darcey Kuemper and Matt Murray, as well as the possibility of retaining Cam Talbot.
Matt Dumba was also linked to Calgary as another player who would fill a void on the blue line and lastly, that the Flames hadn’t yet spoke with Erik Gustafsson.
The Flames, as we all know, landed Markstrom but none of the others came to fruition. That’s not to say Brad Treliving and co. weren’t interested, but that the price may have just been too steep for any of them to land in Calgary.
Here’s some of what Pike wrote in that piece:
It’s no secret that the Calgary Flames didn’t measure up in the 2019-20 season. Their first round playoff exit was followed by a lot of soul-search and analysis by management, culminating with Geoff Ward’s hiring as head coach on Monday.
Sticking with the same coach makes it seem likely that the Flames will be making some roster changes, which is probably why they’ve been connected to a lot of major players in recent trade rumours.
