Gang, for as long as I can remember, the annual challenge for the Calgary Flames was finding the right centre for Jarome Iginla. You see, Iginla, currently special advisor to general manager Craig Conroy after a Hall of Fame-level NHL career, was really great at hockey. But to maximize the skills and impact of someone who’s really great, you need the right linemate or partner.
So as the Flames bring along some of their young defencemen, right-shot puck-movers with names like Zayne Parekh, Hunter Brzustewicz and Henry Mews, the question is whether they have the proper left-shot compliments to their styles and skill-sets.
With that in mind, let’s think about Swedish defensive prospect Malte Gustafsson, who’s expected to go in the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft.

Scouting report

A product of Valkesang, Sweden, Gustafsson is a left shot defenceman listed at 6’4″ and 201 pounds. He’s a June 2008 birthday, so he turns 18 just before the draft.
He played his minor hockey in the Tingsryds AIF system, then moved to HV71 in 2023-24. He played a lot of hockey in 2025-26 at a lot of different levels: the U18 Nationell (4 games), the U20 Nationell (19 games), the Swedish Hockey League (27) and also international appearances with Sweden’s national junior teams at the Junior A World Challenge, the Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the Under-18 World Championship. He was named to the tournament all-star teams for the Junior A Challenge and the Under-18 Worlds.
Here’s what Sportsnet/Pro Hockey Group analyst Jason Bukala wrote about Gustafsson in his March rankings:
Gustafsson is another towering first-round draft prospect. He has a presence to his game. Gustafsson isn’t shy about engaging physically and pushing opponents off his crease to clear shooting lanes for his goaltender to see pucks clearly. He’s also capable of occasionally rushing the puck and pulling up to make plays in the offensive zone. Gustafsson projects as a potential two-way/match-up defenceman at the NHL level.
In his April draft rankings, prior to Gustafsson’s strong Under-18 Worlds, here’s how Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis examined his game:
If teams are looking for a blueliner with a larger frame, Gustafsson could go higher. I’m just not fully convinced he’s more than a big body. Gustafsson is a 6-foot-4 defender who played well in the SHL, despite having little to show for it on the scoresheet. His skating is good for his size, allowing him to play a very mobile game. Gustafsson rarely struggles to get the puck out of his zone. A lack of flash and high-end offensive instinct likely won’t help his draft projection, but there’s still a ton to like about the way he defends and takes up space.

The numbers

Gustafsson played a ton in two tough leagues.
In the U20 Nationell, he posted 12 points in 19 games. He was seventh among under-18 defencemen in Sweden’s top junior league in points, and that’s on an HV71 team that struggled to win games.
He had three points in 27 SHL games. He was second among all under-18 skaters in points and games, with only Viggo Bjorck making more appearances by an under-18 skater in that entire league.

Availability and fit

Gustafsson is a toolsy left shot defender with size. He could be a nice compliment, in size and style, to the slew of right-shot defenders the Flames have in their system.
Might he be available when the Flames pick for the second time, with Vegas’ first-round pick? We’re not sure! He’s 15th on our aggregate rankings, but his placement is more variable than almost any other consensus first-rounder: as high a sixth spot, or as low as 30th. If he’s available, depending on who else is available, he could provide a ton of value in the late 20s.
