FN Draft Profiles: Viggo Bjorck is a high-skilled Swedish forward

The 2026 NHL Draft is a big one for the Calgary Flames, as they approach draft weekend with 11 picks overall, eight in the first three rounds and two in the first round alone. To move the Flames’ rebuilding project forward, they need to nail this draft and, in particular, their early picks.
With that in mind, let’s talk about Swedish forward Viggo Bjorck.
Scouting report
Bjorck is a March 2008 birthday who turned 18 just last month. He’s a right shot forward who can play both centre and the wing. His dad, Jesper, played in Swedish pro hockey for a couple decades. His old brother, Wilson, was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in last year’s draft. He’s currently playing in the Djurgardens organization, where he’s been teammates with Flames prospect Theo Stockselius.
The scouting community is really high on Bjorck and his progression during this season.
In October, Anni Karvinen of Dobber Prospects profiled Bjorck:
Viggo Björck is an extremely intelligent forward out of Sweden who put up a record-breaking DY-1 season. He plays the game in a smooth, effortless way, always two steps ahead and anticipating plays better than anyone else on the ice. While not overly explosive, he’s quick, agile, and slippery in tight spaces. At first glance, Björck might not wow you, since much of his offense comes from subtly exposing mistakes rather than overpowering opponents with speed or dekes. Many scouts worry about his size and tendency to avoid the middle, but cracking an SHL lineup could quiet a lot of those concerns
In March, Sportsnet and Pro Hockey Scout’s Jason Bukala had this assessment of Bjorck as part of his draft rankings:
Bjork is on the rise and one of the most intriguing prospects on my list. Some people will shy away from his size, but Bjorck never shies away from battling in the hard areas of the ice. He plays quick and fast and his three-zone detail has resulted in his coaches at the pro level in Sweden trusting him in all situations.
Bjorck averages over 17 minutes of ice time in the SHL, where he’s contributed 6G-9A in 41 games. Bjorck was exceptional for Sweden at the world juniors where he produced 3G-6A for the gold medal-winning Tre Kronor.
In April, Daily Faceoff’s Steven Ellis provided this rundown as part of his ranking:
While his numbers will be nothing to lose your mind over, the fact that Björck played on the first line – often skating in more than 20 minutes a night – as a 17-year-old in one of the top leagues in the world is bonkers. Björck was electric at the World Juniors, showing a high-end blend of hockey sense and raw skill. He might be a bit small, but it hasn’t hindered him too much against men, and he has been downright dominant against his own age group. Björck is a human highlight reel, and he’s a tremendous passer who will use his quick hands to get the puck into dangerous areas.
Long story short: man, Bjorck is a fun, skilled player who does a lot of things well. He’s not huge – he’s listed at 5’10” – but he’s managed to produce pretty well in the SHL. And playing against his peer group in junior hockey, he’s been dominant at times.
The numbers
A Stockholm kid, Bjorck came up through the IFK Taby HC program – Taby is a Stockholm suburb – and moved onto Djurgardens IF in 2024. He’s played the past two seasons in the various levels of Djurgardens’ system.
In 2024-25, he had 9 points in 6 games in Sweden’s under-18 leagues, 74 points in 42 games in the U20 Nationell, and 1 point in 1 game in the second-tier pro HockeyAllsvenskan. He also represented Sweden at the Under-17 Hockey Challenge (won bronze), the Under-18 Worlds (won silver) and the Hlinka Gretzky Cup (won bronze). He helped Djurgardens with the U18 Nationell and U20 Nationell playoff tournaments, too.
This past season, he played primarily in the top-tier pro SHL. He had 15 points in 42 SHL games. He also played briefly in the U20 Nationell, where he had 5 points in 4 regular season games. He played with Sweden at the World Juniors and won gold. He also helped Djurgardens win the U20 Nationell playoff tournament for the second consecutive year.
As we’re writing this, he’s with Sweden’s men’s national team at a pre World Championships tournament, so there’s a decent shot he could be at the senior Worlds tournament this year for the first time.
Availability and fit
Would the Flames want a highly-skilled Swedish forward? Uh, we’ll just name-drop Kent Nilsson, Hakan Loob and Mikael Backlund. Heck, if the ideal Flames draft selection early in this year’s draft is Ivar Stenberg, the next-best fit might be someone like Bjorck. Highly skilled, adaptable, and a right shot forward that can play centre or the wing? Yes, please.
If the Flames don’t win the draft lottery, or potentially slide back, Bjorck would be right in their wheelhouse in terms of where their pick may land and where he sits on most draft rankings. He’s third on The Hockey News’ list, sixth per Craig Button and Jason Bukala, seventh per Smaht Scouting and Sam Cosentino, and eighth per McKeen’s, Scott Wheeler and Elite Prospects. Even if they stay put at fourth overall, he wouldn’t be that much of a reach, and he would compliment their existing group of young forwards nicely.
Admit it: Backlund mentoring a young Swedish forward like Bjorck over the next few years would be a great fit for the Flames.
