FN’s mid-season Flames prospect updates: Sam Honzek

In the 2024-25 season, Sam Honzek earned an opening night spot on the Calgary Flames roster. This was a huge accomplishment for the Flames’ 2023 first round pick and while it was a brief five game stint due to injury, the confidence the Flames portrayed with this move made a statement. Honzek spent the rest of the season in the AHL, but did all the right things over the summer to earn that NHL spot again and keep it.
Coming into the 2025-26 season, Sam Honzek revealed he worked with Martin Pospisil over the summer in Slovakia to train, bulk up and add 15 lbs of muscle. He had an impactful preseason and earned the opening night spot on the Flames roster for the second season in a row. Honzek got time playing on the second or third line, mostly with Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman. On Oct. 28 against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Honzek scored his first NHL goal in a moment he will never forget. 
His next goal came eight games later against the San Jose Sharks. By Nov. 15, Sam Honzek had played in 18 games with the Flames, putting up two goals and two assists. He was sitting at a +1 rating for the season as well. Unfortunately, in his game against the Winnipeg Jets on Nov. 15, he was the victim of some friendly fire that pretty well ended his season.
Mikael Backlund had puck possession and was skating into the offensive zone when he collided with Honzek. Honzek needed to leave the game and did not return. It was listed as an upper-body injury by the team with an initial week-to-week status. It was later revealed that this injury would require surgery and after a successful procedure, his status was updated to up to six months. 
It’s been a rough road for Sam Honzek, dealing with injuries between his major junior, NHL and AHL days. This season seemed to be a good chance for him to get a good long look at the NHL and with the company he was playing with, it could’ve been a very positive year for his development. The way he was going, he could’ve been an every day NHLer but now has the main focus of recovering and regaining his strength. The other devastating part of this injury is that the potential for him to play in the Olympics alongside Martin Pospisil this year could no longer be a possibility. 
Unless his recovery is fast-tracked, Honzek is assumed to be ruled out for the rest of the season. Hopefully, his offseason is as productive and successful as last season so we can see more of what number 29 can do in a Flaming C.
