Friedman: Calgary Flames to look at ‘4 or 5 candidates’ in second phase of coaching interviews

If you’re hoping for the Calgary Flames to name a new head coach soon, we have some good news! It sure is looking like things are progressing in that direction. On Monday’s edition of the Jeff Marek Show on the Sportsnet Radio Network, Elliotte Friedman indicated that things are moving into the second phase of interviews and that the club is interviewing four or five individuals for that job opening.
Here’s Friedman:
“Calgary, I think they’re going to begin their second phase of interviews pretty soon. I think it’s going to be four or five candidates, second round. I think what Calgary’s looking at is someone who’s a bit fresher. I think it’s possible it’s someone who doesn’t have NHL experience. I’d also think it’s possible it’s someone who does have at least one coaching stint in their past, but I don’t think it’s going to be anybody who’s been around awhile. I think they’re looking a little bit newer, I think, is what I’ve heard.”
The Flames have been without a head coach since they announced the departure of Darryl Sutter back on May 1. They’ve been conducting interviews over the past couple of weeks, with an assortment of names being bandied about – including internal candidates Ryan Huska, Mitch Love and Kirk Muller.
We’ll have more on the Flames’ coaching search as it unfolds.
