Friedman: ‘Deteriorating relationship’ with Darryl Sutter played role in Brad Treliving’s exit

On the day that the Stanley Cup playoffs began, the biggest story in hockey on Monday was Brad Treliving parting ways with the Calgary Flames. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman in his 32 Thoughts column, the relationship between Treliving and head coach Darryl Sutter played a big role in Treliving opting to leave the organization.
“Treliving and the Flames “mutually agreed to part ways” on Monday, five days after their last game of a disappointing 2022-23. Don Maloney, now President of Hockey Operations and interim GM, said Treliving first indicated last Wednesday he was leaving. It is believed a deteriorating relationship with Sutter played a major role in the GM’s decision, that the two could not continue working together and really hadn’t communicated well in some time. If Sutter didn’t have an extension, maybe the outcome is different.”
Of note: in early December, the Flames announced the call-up of AHL leading scorer Matthew Phillips. Well, actually, Brad Treliving did…
#Flames General Manager Brad Treliving has announced the recall of forward Matthew Phillips from the @AHLWranglers.
Phillips was on the NHL roster for 15 days and dressed just twice. Jakob Pelletier was called up in early January and didn’t dress for two weeks. Pelletier eventually got into the lineup for 24 games, but that was over an 87-day stint on the NHL roster, and also saw him scratched for much of the club’s stretch drive.
Friedman noted that, as has been reported elsewhere, Treliving and Sutter were both offered contract extensions in the fall, during training camp. Sutter accepted his, while Treliving opted not to at that time. Contract talks continued with Treliving throughout the season, but ultimately weren’t resolved.
We’ll have more on the Flames’ search for a new GM as the story develops.
