Former Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving was formally unveiled to the media as the new GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs at a press conference on Thursday morning. To take the job, Treliving – who was under contract with the Flames until June 30 – was allowed out of his deal early, albeit not without some strings attached.
Per Sportsnet&#8217;s Elliotte Friedman: one of the conditions on Treliving was that he cannot be at the Leafs&#8217; draft table at the end of June.

Maple Leafs president of hockey operations Brendan Shanahan was asked about restrictions on Treliving&#8217;s draft involvement at the press conference by Daily Faceoff&#8217;s Matt Larkin. Here&#8217;s what his response was:
<blockquote>&#8220;Yes, there were some restrictions imposed by the Calgary Flames but we&#8217;re not going to go into those details. I will say that I&#8217;ve talked to Brad about that. We have an excellent head scout in Wes Clark. We have an excellent scouting team. We pick in the first, fifth and sixth round. They are still doing their job. They are preparing. That part won&#8217;t change. We have the utmost confidence in our scouting staff. But I won&#8217;t go into those details.&#8221;</blockquote>
Restrictions on an incoming executive&#8217;s involvement at an entry draft aren&#8217;t uncommon. The most recent example in Flames history was Craig Button, freshly arrived from Dallas, not being allowed to be involved in the 2000 draft after he was hired as GM.
The 2023 NHL Draft takes place June 28 &amp; 29 in Nashville.
